The Pentalateral Energy Forum looks at the future of hydrogen quality

As we see the implementation of hydrogen strategies and the building or conversion of cross-border hydrogen pipelines in Northwest Europe, hydrogen quality becomes a crucial topic. The EU has taken up the topic and recently passed a legislative package for the market design in gas and hydrogen. Market participants and network operators will, inter alia, need clarity as to which grades of purity will be available in the growing hydrogen market. This is why the Pentalateral Energy Forum organized on 20th March a workshop dedicated to hydrogen quality.

The workshop gathered hydrogen experts from 7 countries (BE-NL-LU-FR-DE-AT-CH), representatives of the European Commission, the industry, hydrogen network operators, energy regulators and standardization associations. The meeting aimed at exchanging information on ongoing activities and the state of play on European and national level regarding hydrogen quality and at identifying challenges with regard to hydrogen qualities available at the supply side and required at the demand side, and technical specifications in network transmission system. Further, clarity is needed on the hydrogen quality in the network development plan process.

The participants concluded the need to develop common rules for the internal market & cross-border flows at European level, with the involvement of the European Commission, the member states and hydrogen network operators and users.
